This request for information (RFI) seeks a positive patient identification system aimed at enhancing patient safety, reducing identification errors, and streamlining clinical workflows across all hospital facilities. The solution must positively identify patients at bedside through barcode scanning of wristbands, display patient’s current and pending orders, and provide step-by-step specimen collection and labeling instructions.
The system must support contingency situations such as missed draws and the need for extra tubes, facilitate re-routing of tasks among phlebotomists, and fully integrate with current VA patient wristbands for electronic barcode scanning. Security features must allow for identification of logged-in users and the auditing of their activities. The system should also be compliant with existing blood bank practices, offer real-time order and status displays, and include an emergency “rainbow draw” feature for code blue patients who do not have pre-existing chart orders. Provisions must be included for computer downtime, including robust backups and disaster recovery mechanisms.
Best-fit vendors:
• Experience supplying and implementing healthcare identification systems
• Familiarity with VA or large hospital environments
• Ability to provide barcode-based patient identification solutions
• Proven track record with workflow automation in clinical settings
• Capacity for providing secure, audit-capable software with disaster recovery features
