The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, is seeking qualified contractors to perform maintenance dredging and rock removal for the New Haven Harbor Federal Navigation Project in New Haven, Connecticut. This large-scale project will involve deepening and widening the navigation channel and turning basin, extending from Long Island Sound to the Quinnipiac River. Specifically, the channel will be deepened from 35 feet to 40 feet below Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW), with planned widening by 100 to 250 feet at designated locations.
The contract will require removal of approximately 4,500,000 cubic yards of silt and fine sand, as well as 61,000 cubic yards of rock, which will necessitate blasting. Mechanical dredging equipment will be used to excavate and transport the dredged material to four designated beneficial use sites within the harbor, with residual material delivered to the Central Long Island Sound Disposal Site. Construction activities will be conducted over two dredge seasons, starting in October 2026 and concluding by May 2028.
The work schedule is structured to avoid disruption to sensitive environmental resources. Dredging, filling, and blasting north of the New Haven Harbor breakwaters must be completed each season between October 1 and January 31, while similar operations south of the breakwaters are to be conducted between October 1 and May 31. No construction activities are anticipated from June 1, 2027, to September 30, 2027. This opportunity is open to both small and large businesses experienced in marine construction and dredging operations.
